Photo

I have never figured out how to post pictures on here but today Matt posted a photo of me over on my Xanga site:http://www.xanga.com/home.aspx?user=dorcassmucker

I hope to post pictures of the rest of the family sometime.

Quote of the Day:
"Ach, zu natural!"
(Translation: Oh, too natural!)
--my mom, whenever she saw a picture of herself

  2. I visited Virginia for the first time in 1998 and GA, FL, and NC in 2002. I loved the accent, the word "y'all," the manners, and the swate tae. I even learned to put a honeyed tone in my voice and ask, "Y'all want some mo' swate tae?" My children, blunt Yankees that they are, did not appreciate this Southern graciousness.

    Sorry to you non-dutchies.

People I meet often say they pictured me older and heavier(!)from reading my stories. Not sure how this works.

Oh MY! Ladies, that is extremely difficult. Tell me, have you ever read any Boonastial (Boonastiel? pronounced bonashteel). If you haven't you absolutely must! I can't read it too well, but it is hysterical to have a good old dutchmen read it for you. It's a favorite pastime at family gatherings, and the people that don't know Dutch, laugh hysterically just watching the people that do! Fun stuff! They have got to be the most hilarious "Dutch stories" you ever heard in your life.

Have any of you read the Pa. Dutch New Testament? I love watching Dutch-speakers read it for the first time...the look on their faces is priceless.

EG, sorry we lost you, but this is fun. I haven't written a dutch conversation in years, probably not since I sent coded notes to my sister in high school.

  10. Um, Dorcas, is this picture 20 years old, or... a picture of one of your daughters, or....perhaps an Oil of Olay commercial? : ) Very nice!! I seem to remember you mentioning grey hair resulting from Matt's experiments - where are they? I know, I know, you would say they just don't show up on the picture... I would say that you appear to be a "maiden", but you have the responsibilities, and the experience, of a "matron"! (Which is what I was visualizing you as, I guess...) Good for you! I fear that, for me, it shall never be!!

BTW, all you Dutch speakers - I find it ironic that I am out of the loop right now because I don't speak Dutch, when my parents refrained from teaching us Dutch so that we would fit in better!! We lived in a "mission" setting in a Kentucky holler - (Caney Creek -not far from Bethel Camp.) Now they wish they would have spoken it with us. They did find it useful for having private conversations right in front of us! Oh, how nice it would be to have that option now with our kids! (to have a private conversation, that is!)

  11. Maybe Matt air-brushed the picture and added the pierced ear while he was at it?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Sheryl, I think it's traggic when both parents speak another "language" and don't teach it to their children. Dutch doesn't SEEM like it's even another language, but from the poor lost non-dutch, it clearly is. :) Sorry, to everyone else. This is too fun! And trust me, it wouldn't be NEARLY as funny if you got someone to translate it. The humor is lost in translation.

Arlene, ich mus all veight faleida! Sis net foon fa baveda! Ich glich net jogga. Sell mught mich puffa un hot schnaffa un no mi sticht grickt gons vesht rot un ich schvits ve un hassa maun.

  13. Ach my, deah vipes-lite sin usht tsoo fonnich.

Ok, the picture is two years old. It was taken by my friend EG and was on the back cover of my book. Never noticed the 'pierced ear' before, ha ha!, EG, did you put that there??

I probably won't take another official portrait til I publish another book.

Trust me, I look older in less posed, lighting-controlled pictures, like those dreadful flash-in-your-face pictures my children take. I just didn't feel like posting those for some reason.

Ag, meah vella all sei vee de Bonnie. Sigh.

  18. So far the number of comments on this post come in second. "Books" still holds first rank. Have you noticed that the "Quote of the Day" often gets more comments than the post itself? For example, Steven's comment on the 4th of July about suspenders led to the gust of cape dress and related responses while the photo quote boasted a rash of alien lanuage comments?

    ReplyDelete

If you got kfitsed instead of shlake you've paid your dues in life.

But oh, the sharp wit, the repartee...where does it come from?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Perhaps we are women endowed with wit of volcanic like nature and it just took the right words to cause it to erupt?

And the tragedy of it? Most of these poor people have no idea how witty we are. Sigh. There is no one to appreciate us at our peak!

Ich stell ga gooka fa un hassa mann us can des all lassa. No ah dut manna us ich been so schmat un sassy, us ah stelt nonna falla ough da bodda un me frougha ep ich vill si frau si.

  28. Ag, I am racking my brain for a hassa Man that knows Deitch! I love matchmaking.

Paul, PA Dutch was never a written language until Wycliffe Translators(!) decided to translate the NT into Dutch and standardized the phonetics. They did a good job too. Trouble is, most of us are still illiterate. They need to come by and have classes in little bamboo huts like they do in Madagascar or wherever.

"Easier to be witty in Dutch" As Garrison Keillor once said, (paraphrased) "One is never so witty or so wise or so romantic in a language learned later in life." He was talking about the old Norweigians in Minnesota but it relates to us who had Pa. Dutch as our first language.

Dutch is way funnier than English.
