July Article

You can read today's column at http://www.registerguard.com/news/2005/07/10/ol.smucker.0710.html

Quote of the Day:
"I'm sorry--I get hungry here."
--Matt, explaining why he took all 8 leftover grilled hamburgers to the warehouse to sustain himself on his 4pm-to-midnight shift, after I found that there weren't any leftover burgers here for Ben and Steven to eat and called Matt up and asked him if he suddenly grew a pink snout. I admit he works hard and some expert said you burn 100 calories every 15 minutes sacking seed, but still--8 hamburgers!

  1. Does Matt have any friends visit while he is on that shift?

  2. Ah, yes, I did something last week that I haven't done in over 20 years. I read a novel. Clean yet captivating. In fact, so much so that my understanding husband let me finish before preparing supper! I'm usually busy with research and other weightier matters. For all you young busy moms out there who spend the day putting out fires, life does get better as a grandmother when you can enjoy the real "campfire".

  3. Anonymous--Matt's been working that shift for only a week and so far I don't think anyone has come to visit him.
Thanks for the encouragement, Granny Gert. I think I'm going to enjoy being a grandma.

  4. Good article!! Whatever it takes for you to keep your head is worth it! I have four little ones in less than four years and I cannot imagin what it will be like when they are teenagers!! God have mercy!

  5. Anonymous--I've only had visitors once this past week, on the Fourth of July. Feel free to stop by sometime, assuming that you live around here.

  6. The reason I asked if you had any visitors is that if you did, that might explain why you needed so many hamburgers. If I come will you have any to share?

  7. Anonymous--Sorry, no hamburgers to share. I ate them all without any help from visitors. 5 for supper, and the other three to carry me through the rest of my shift.
Who are you, anyway? Do I know you?

  8. Does anyone get an inkling here of why I have such a hard time keeping enough food in the house?

  9. Eat up ye lad! Just a tip: Mom's wouldn't go into such a dither if their chil'en let them know what was going on. Relax--I'm a senior citizen.

  10. Japeth--what causes you to think that the teen years will be so bad? Such a category is not even mentioned in scripture. I know of a couple who at the first Christmas of marriage there was only the two of them. By the second Christmas there was six. The wife had twins in January and another set in December of the same year! His grace IS sufficient.

  11. Granny- My comment was pretty much tongue in cheek. I am very grateful for the good example I have in those larger families around me.

You are right, God's grace IS sufficient as we have four with us and three with the Lord after almost five years of marriage and two bouts with cancer. He has and will continue to see us thru.

I do dread the grocery bills though!!

  12. Dorcas, I just wanted you to know that I have read your by-line in the Register Guard for awhile. I have found them very funny, and sometimes incredibly wise. I appreciate that you put yourself out there, and ask your readers to think about questions of life and faith in a much more than theoretical/theological way. Thanks!
