This morning I have muscles that I never knew were there, and they are all trying to get my attention. A grab here, a pinch there, a twist somewhere else.
Yesterday I went to Curves for a free try-it-out session. Sharon has been trying to get me to go with her for a long time and I finally succumbed.
It was fun.
So, should I join or not?
Pros:
I need the exercise.
It's a non-threatening environment, with plenty of lumpy 60-somethings--and no men allowed.
I can waive the join-up fee if I bring in a bag of groceries.
It's fun.
I'd get Sharon off my back.
I could probably get an article out of it.
Cons:
I'd still have to pay a monthly fee.
It seems so very American to get in the car and drive 10 miles to exercise.
I'd probably find it hard to take the time to do it.
And then I would drown in guilt if I didn't get my money's worth out of it.
Paul is kind of dubious about the idea.
Quote of the Day:
"I sort of enjoyed it because the guys all thought it was cool and the girls were all sympathetic."
--Matt, on getting a black eye at Bible school
Is it Mennonite? I ask you!
ReplyDeleteWhat does Proverbs 31 say about Curves? I gotta go check!
ReplyDeleteProverbs 31 says, She girdeth her loins with strengh and strengtheneth her arms.
ReplyDelete"Sounds like exercise to me!!!"
What does Proverbs 31 say about being secretive, and hiding under "anonymous" ?? :)
"Is it Mennonite". What kind of question is that?? Shouldn't we go beyond that??
ReplyDeleteAnd no, I do not believe that its wrong to go to Curves.
All the lumpy 40, 50 and 60 somethings would probably wonder why you're there! Pauline
ReplyDeleteYou should join! I joined last week and have been 3 times. I love it. Time will tell if my commitment will be rewarded, but I have faith.
ReplyDeleteI timed it today - 7 minutes to drive there, 30 minutes to workout, 7 minutes home. Less than 1 hour and I have done my workout. Three hours a week for a better and healthier me. I'm worth it!
I joined Curves a year ago, and I enjoyed it for about 3 months. But then, the weather turned beautiful, and I decided it was more pleasant to run for 30 minutes outdoors than to drive 15 minutes, jump around for 30 minutes, and drive 15 more minutes back to my house. I just prefer the outdoors. So the next 9 months, I let Curves deduct their monthly fee from my bank, while I happily ran outdoors in the beauty of nature. I think I'm more of an "outdoor athlete...." No more health clubs for me.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't implying Curves was wrong-- I was just asking if it fit the image. :-) Did Menno Simons jog? I ask you!
ReplyDeleteJulana, I get what you meant now! Anyways it is humerous to think of Menno Simons jogging.
ReplyDeleteTo Chewy Mom -- you could have cancelled, lost some money, but not all of it. I understand the fee for cancelling cannot exceed $50.00.
ReplyDeleteI just have to add my "two cents" worth to the Curves discussion. I have been going to Curves for 2 1/2 years and I STILL love it. I also like the fact that it is definitely a great cardio workout, which anyone can benefit from. Poor Menno S. probably didn't have any opportunities like this ;)
ReplyDeleteMenno S. wasn't eating out of the Mennonite Community Cookbook, either! Or riding around in a cushy mini-van. He probably had no need of curves. :-)
ReplyDeleteI would love to go to Curves(it's not far away from me)...BUT.
ReplyDeleteThere's money involved, I have a rebounder, and a fairly decent walking route, even though I meet much traffic.
If a Mennonite would have started this business... whoooohooooo!
And Menno??? I've seen pictures of him. It looked like he had curves to me...*LOL*
As my friend Arlene told me last night, if her rich friend "Lucy" would buy Curves-type equipment and set it up in a garage in Halsey (Menno Grand Central City) she would have us flocking in by the dozens. Especially if we could sign up for a month at a time instead of a year.
ReplyDeleteAnd then if she'd open a fabric store next door...whoa, what a gold mine.
Oh snicker, (and I'm not being ugly it just cracks me up!), only in this blog would people debate Curves as being right or wrong. Dorcas, I don't know how you do it, but, oh I better not say it here, I'll offend someone.
ReplyDeleteUm, hey, computer had the flu, was sent to the Dr., and was returned with a blank address book. E-mail me oh thou wonderful woman, I shall then procede to complete the above thought in the private light where I don't step on someone's oversensitive toesies.

ReplyDeleteAnon,
ReplyDeleteIt's not about Curves being right or wrong; it's about whether it's Mennonite. :-)
THere's an image to keep up. :-)
Gokum has hit on a potential solution: a non-wordlly Mennonite version. :-)
