Remember the old woman who lived in a shoe? I'm a lot like her, with a husband and varying numbers of children in our 100-year-old farmhouse. This blog is about our lives.

LFH: The Late Harvest
Today's Letter from Harrisburg is about the harvest that finally arrived.
I grew up on a farm and know very well about the threats and anxieties of uncertain weather during harvest time. So it was with a sense of great nostalgia that I read your column from the Register-Guard entitled "The Late Harvest." I could really empathize with all of the wondering and checking and discussions about whether or not there would even be a crop! We were not harvesting grass seed, and we did not have the blessing of so many huge combines, but my father did have one combine, and prior to that he used a threshing machine and horses and wagons to bring in the grain bundles. I well remember the endless dust, too, and the heat at high noon and afternoon. Anyway, your article was great and brought back many memories! I knew that my husband would enjoy reading this article, too, so I forwarded it to him. He wrote his comment back to me and saying, "Dorcas can write so vividly that you almost get dusty just reading about the combining!" Yes. He's right.
Fascinating column this month.
