About

I'm Dorcas, wife to Paul and mom to 6 young adults.  We live near Harrisburg, Oregon in a house that's been in the Smucker family for over 100 years.

Paul is a pastor at our Mennonite church, the principal of our church school, and also the owner of Wilton Smucker Warehouse, a seed-cleaning business begun by his grandfather.

Life in the Shoe began in 2005, at a nephew's urging.  We had just adopted a ten-year-old son after having five biological children.  Life was very busy and wild, and this was a way to document the memories in the middle of the chaos.

I've also been writing a monthly column called Letter from Harrisburg for the Eugene Register-Guard for 17 years.  The columns accumulated into seven books:
Ordinary Days
Upstairs the Peasants are Revolting.
Downstairs the Queen is Knitting.
Tea and Trouble Brewing
Footprints on the Ceiling
Fragrant Whiffs of Joy
Sunlight Through Dusty Windows
