Letter from Harrisburg

Today's column grew out of Emily swatting the crane flies the other week.

  1. Why is it, that our grandparents and great grandparents were so silent about the bad things that happened. Was it shame? As a young man and father of eight children my husband’s grandfather took his own life by hanging. No one ever talked about it. As adults those eight children NEVER talked about it. However many of them struggled with depression and I often wondered if their father didn’t suffer from the same malady.
