Life in the Shoe

Remember the old woman who lived in a shoe? I don't judge her nearly as harshly as I used to, now that I have a husband and six children. In our 100-year-old farmhouse, we have broth, bread, and lots of Smucker personalities, and this blog is about our lives.

My Dad in World

When I visited my parents I was struck by how thoroughly Dad read his copy of World, a Christian news magazine.  I was also impressed with his morning prayers and how they covered people and events around the world.

I knew there was a connection between the two, that the magazine informed and focused his prayers.

I thought the good folks who put World magazine together would enjoy hearing about this.

So I sent them an email.

And heard back.  The publisher wanted to mention Dad in his column.  Would that be ok?

I called the folks and tried to explain this.  "What?  World Magazine?  Yes, yes I read it.  You did what??"

Finally I talked to Mom and she sort of understood, and interpreted for Dad, and I think he gave a vaguely-informed consent.

But he enjoys attention, so I knew he wouldn't mind, informed or not.

The article will be in the upcoming magazine, but you can read it online here.

It's great! I went and read the article. I remember when my parents had a subscription and I would read it - maybe they still have it and I just don't notice when I'm at their house?

Dorcas, this is incredible! When you said "mention my dad in his column" I thought, you know, "World is also read by Sandra Smith of KS, Amos Yoder of MN, Mimi Brown of OK, and..."

What a beautiful gift to your dad and the world! (Not World, THE world. Though I guess to World too.) I loved reading what Joel and Dorcas had to say about Amos. Beautiful!

Thanks so much for sharing. I don't know what impresses me most -the fact that you told World about your dad, or that Joel Belz wrote such a nice article. The photo is great!

What a wonderful tribute to the faithfulness of your dad in prayer. I was touched, and convicted of my need to make prayer more of a priority in my life.
I had never heard of the World magazine before...I liked what I saw.

What a lovely tribute to your father. Such kind words, well written. As Aimee mentioned, your father's faithfulness convicts me in my own prayer life.

Interesting! And I have a question for you. A friend of mine, whether she knows it or not, could use the encouragement I read in one of your blogs about Moms and whether they're doing a good job and how their children's eyes look compared to the eyes you saw in Africa...is that enough to go on? I looked back around the time of your trip and didn't find it. --Doris

So glad for such a blessing! Dorcas, have you ever read "If Teacups Could Talk" by Emilie Barnes? It came out several years ago, a collection of thoughts and recipes and ideas, all related to tea. It's a pretty book. Betsy in Indiana

I read that article when we got our magazine and wondered if that was your dad! Didn't know him but it all seemed to fit with what I've read on your blog.
