Borax and icing sugar worked to get rid of our ants. However, it seems your ant problem is a lot worse than ours was. Hope you are able to win the war against them. :)
I liked your thoughts about marriage! And if your sister-in-law really wants a good book on keeping your marriage alive after you've been married awhile...I would recommend the book "Rekindling the Romance" by Dennis & Barbara Rainey. It's a great book, with lots of practical ideas!
borax mixed with maple syrup in shallow dishes(lids from milk jugs, etc) strategicly placed hither and yon will first draw the massive army of little ants, but after a few days, they will dwindle and dissappear. They apparently take home some of the mixture, feed it to their young, and probably the queen, and it kills them. It really, truly works. I had strangely conflicted emotions when I did it to the cute little varmits. It's an odd combination of guilt and glee. I got over the guilt. Way.

Now, I've not had them to the extent you have them, so who knows if it would help you or not.

I can see why this article resonated with so many people -- it's REAL. People can see themselves in this, even though their situations might be completely different. GREAT article!
Tea Tree Oil seems to work wonders. It's invisible, smells nice (to me, not the ants), and they don't "cross the line," wherever I put it (currently at the entrance to a small hole where the molding and wall above my kitchen counter come together). My little bottle has its own plastic applicator, so I don't need to waste the oil by applying it with a q-tip. It's spendy, but goes a looooong way. I've used about 1/16" so far. Lots left. (The ants reappeared after several days, but after a third application, they've given up.)
